PRELIMINARY RACE ANALYSIS

I find it very useful to first "skim" through a race to determine if it might be a good 10-cent superfecta betting opportunity.  I briefly look at each horse in the race and make a quick assessment of its chances.  I just go with my first impression before I get trapped into the eventual "zigging" and "zagging".

I will use a blank sheet of paper and place each horse into one of the following three categories:

Possible 1st/2nd

Possible 3rd/4th

Off The Board*

*This is a term used to describe horses that finish 5th or worse in a race.  (Only the first four finishers are usually displayed on the (tote) board, so the rest of the horses are considered to have finished "off the board".)

I will know immediately if this is a good betting race for me depending on field size and the number of horses I have placed in the "Possible 1st/2nd" category.  See below:

Field Size

Possible 1st/2nd

8

3-4 horses

10

3-5 horses

12

3-6 horses

If I have narrowed down the potential 1st/2nd place finishers to at least 3 and no more that 50% of the horses in the field, then I believe I have a good "read" on the race and it is worth my time and money.  I will then focus solely only this group of horses to zero in on the possible winner.

If I have too few or too many horses in this category I consider the race to be "wide open' and will pass.

During this process I have also identified my potential 3rd/4th place finishers which will make putting together my 10-cent superfecta betting combination that much easier.  In addition, I will not be including the "off the board" horses which will help keep my costs down.
